Kenneth Edmund Northfield
November 20, 1947 - August 20, 2024
Susan Andahl Krause wanted to let our class know that long time friend and neighbor Kenneth Northfield passed away at his home in Port Orchard this evening. Please keep him and his family in your prayers. He will be missed.
Kenneth Edmund Northfield had a stroke and died of a heart attack on August 20, 2024. Ken served 4 years in the Navy as a crew member on submarines. He worked at the Bremerton Navel ship yard working on ships.
Ken was married to Carol Van BusKirk for 52 years and had 9 acres in Port Orchard. Ken built the barn, corral, and arena for their horses. He went to Oklahoma and learned to be a ferrier. However, he came down with myasthenia gravis (gMG). He had to take an early retirement from the ship yards and give up being a ferrier. He learned how to engrave trophies while working at Athletic Supply while in high school. He made that his second vocation going to horse shows on the west coast.
Ken is survived by his wife Carol, daughter Tonya Northfield Hathaway, 4 grandchildren, sister Nancy Northfield Bell (MHS 1970) and brother Bill Northfield (MHS 1968). When Ken's father Kenneth (10/17/1900 - 02/22/1958) died, Ken became the man of the house at age 10. Ken's Mother never remarried.

This is really sad. I have known Ken since we were about 8 years old. We were in the same Cub Scouts pack and then later in Troop 103 of Boy Scouts. We were in classes together from elementary schools, to junior high to MHS. We recently had a nice chat together on this website maybe 6 months ago. We talked about his metal engraving business. I am sorry to see him go. Ken was a genuinely nice person. He was fun to be with and a good friend. You can see Ken for 7 seconds on the MHS April,1966 video at 2 minutes 21 seconds into the film (2:21-2:28). I don't know the identity of the young woman he is with. If anyone knows please let me know.
