His 38 year education career included teaching 6th grade in Bremerton, Principal in Cathlamet, Counselor and Principal in the Edmonds SD, Superintendent of Wenatchee Schools, and Deputy Superintendent in Renton SD. Hal was a gifted individual. He was an artist, a poet, an accomplished woodworker, golfer, gardener, and an avid reader of all genre. His greatest love, however, was fishing whether it was in Puget Sound or Lake Washington. His greatest joy was to be on the water at sunrise to see the sun come up and the fish nibble. Hal was a former member of the Renton Lion's Club (past president), the Edmonds Jaycees, and the Washington State School Superintendents Association. God bless you, Hal, and may you forever see the sun rise and the fish nibble. We want to especially thank Hal's medical team at Virginia Mason Medical Center, the wonderful people of the Franciscan Hospice team, and the kind team of caregivers from Home Instead. Per Hal's request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers or memorials, please give a book to your favorite child and read with them no matter how old they are. I didn't know this about Hal Kloes.  He was a Korean War Vet, played football at Western and loved to fish.  When you are 16, 17, and 18 you don't even think about your teachers as being "real" people!  I remember during basketball season, game day, no practice, Steve Laffoon and I left school an hour early because we had 6th period "Athletics" (what a joke, we should have been taking a math course or something).  Steve was in his Austin Healy and I was in my blue 56 Ford and we tore out of the driveway heading towards Perrinville, we were making lots of noise (with my single exhaust glass pack!!!) and Dr. Kloes was in his office and saw (heard) us go by (we're so smart).  Next day, we both get called into his office and get slapped with a 30 day no driving privilege to school (cutting off my leg seemed less of a punishment).  I had to ride with John Nickell for a month!  That is what I remember vividly about Hal Kloes.  He matter of factly told us what the punishment was and there was no questioning his authority.  It was over.  Needless to say, I never peeled out of school during the daylight again.

He caught Jiggs Haines and me trying to enter a Spring dance our Senior year after experimenting with fermented beverages. He turned us away, but although he could have made life quite uncomfortable for us, he didn't, and we graduated on time.
